Vera let out a long yawn as she laid by her alpha's side under the shade of the big tree. She was the strongest fighter in the whole world, knowing how to nibble, nip, bite, and now scrape on command. However, the training was starting to grow boring. Dragon had only been teaching her how to fight, and what about the other stuff? Was there just a little more to training than just fighting? There was accepting her alpha's touch, but that was just about it. She wanted a little more.
Dragon sighed. She knew they had to continue training for battle, but at the same time, she too was starting to grow a little tired of it. Perhaps a small break to do something different in between would help, and she wondered for a few moments what it would be, before it hit her.
"You know..." Dragon started, prompting Vera to look up at her alpha. "I don't think I've ever taught you how to respond to your own name. You've probably been wonder for a long time why I keep referring you by a certain sound..."
Vera gave a short grunt in acknowledgment. Indeed, her alpha had neglected to explain to her why she was called by a certain sound. This was likely an opportunity to get away from more battle training, and more to something that was a bit more casual.
"I should probably teach you your name..." Dragon said now. "It would definitely be a bit more fresh than battle training, after all..."

Dragon grinned and stood up. "You've likely heard this many times before, but I call you by the sound, 'Vera'," she said as she turned to face Vera.
Vera tilted her head. For the longest time, she had wondered what a 'vera' was, or if it was a something you do instead of a thing, or just some sort of strange noise that her alpha used to recognize her as who she was. It indeed was a strange concept.
At the same time though, she couldn't understand the Fiero's concept of identity at all either. Most Fieros identify others by changing their scent to match the scent of the Fiero that they are talking about. For a Fiero with a nose, such identification would be easy. What about her though? She had no nose, only a heat sensor and an eye that has to get up in someone's face in order to see anything clearly.

There was no way with a snout like hers for Vera to be able to understand what a Fiero is talking about when they change their scent to mimic another Fiero. Lengthy descriptions of that Fiero would have to be given instead, and who would take the time to do that unless they put the Fiero they're talking about in front of her?
Vera didn't know. This new and weird way to refer to someone could very well help her out indeed. Perhaps she can learn this sound that is what her alpha calls her by, and then perhaps learn how to repeat the sound herself.
...
No, she should likely leave that for when they were ready how to teach her how to speak. She didn't know when that would be, but whatever. The time would come eventually.
Vera looked up at her alpha again and gave a muffled bark to represent her willingness to learn her sound identification.
Dragon nodded at this with a smile. "You've probably wondered what this sound that I identify you as means too, correct?"

Vera nodded to this. Indeed, she was wondering what "Vera" means. What was it? Was it a thing? Something you do? How you describe something? What?
"How I came up with the name 'Vera' comes from a little bit of inspiration from two things," Dragon explained. "'Ver' is the Spanish word for 'too see'. I took into consideration your unusual eye placement, and sort of wanted to place emphasis on that. The 'a' was tacked on to give it a second syllable and to give it a more feminine sound to it, seeing that you are indeed female."
Vera nodded at this, but then tilted her head again.
"...You probably don't understand exactly what I just said in some parts of that explanation, but hopefully it may make more sense to you in the future..." Dragon said with a sheepish grin. "The most you should probably make out of it is that your name does have meaning to who you are in a way, and your name is Vera."

Vera nodded again. This naming concept still seemed a little strange to her, but it would do her a lot more good than what she currently has for a communicator. For the Fieros that don't respond in such a way, it would still be difficult, but at least she won't have that problem with her alpha, not that she really had a problem with it to begin with.
Some relatively distant sound caught her attention, making Vera look away from Dragon to see if she could pinpoint the sound. Dragon tilted her head. This would definitely be a good opportunity to see if her Fiero actually responded to her own name.
"Vera?"
The ear closest to Dragon twitched before Vera looked up at her again. She had responded to her own name.
Dragon grinned. Vera smiled back before focusing again on the sound she had heard in the distance.
"Vera?"
Again, Vera turned to look at Dragon. This time she gave a muffled grunt, as if to ask what it was that Dragon wanted. This made Dragon grin even more.
"You are responding to your name, and that is all I wanted out of you for now," Dragon said, chuckling. Vera made a motion of her head like someone would when rolling their eyes, except that she didn't have eyes to roll on her skull. She did, however, chuckle.
"Well, I think we are done with that, I hope," Dragon said now as she sat back down beside Vera. "Time to plan how to teach you your next attack."

Vera stood up and stretched just moments after Dragon had sat down. The idea of more training still seemed like a rather boring one, but at the same time, it was going to linger there until it was done, so they might as well get on with it. Besides, if there was a light scratch, there were probably stronger, more damage making attacks associated with the claws.
Vera trotted over to the scratching post and sat down beside it. She turned her head to look at Dragon expectantly. She was ready for her next lesson.
Dragon watched her for a moment before grinning faintly and standing up. Vera was ahead of her this time. She likely already had an idea of what her alpha was planning. Dragon walked over to Vera now. "You seem ready for the new attack," she commented.
Vera nodded.
Dragon nodded back and turned to look at the scratching post. "Just casually scratch the post. Don't claw it to death, but don't scrape it either, okay?"

Vera nodded and looked at the scratching post again. Taking her strong paw, she swiped at the post, leaving three good scratches in it, but still not strong enough to leave much gouging in it. Indeed, it was much like how a cat would scratch someone to get them away, rather than clawing them in order to do major damage.
Dragon nodded in approval. "Excellent," she said. "Do the same move again, but only quicker this time. Remember we are training for a moving target that could very well be faster than you."
Vera nodded again and swiped at the scratching post once more, much quicker than before. The marks she made were the same.
Dragon nodded with approval. "Great job, Vera," she said with a smile. "This attack we are training, as you may likely already know, is the next step up from scrape. This is an attack called 'scratch'. Stronger, does more damage, but training it and the move set is relatively the same."

Vera nodded, now beginning to flex her weaker foreleg. She pretty much knew from scrape what came next, but she didn't want to get too ahead of herself, in case her alpha decided to change something up or something.
Dragon glanced at the flexing Vera was doing before turning her attention back to the post. "Now," she began, "scratch the post with the weak paw. Remember that we want to keep on training it to make it stronger."
Vera nodded again in acknowledgment. Yep, that was to be expected. That didn't really matter though. Her alpha was only emphasizing that they keep working to making the weak stronger.
Vera took her weaker paw and swiped it at the post as well. The claw marks made were not as good as the ones made with the strong paw, but that didn't matter right now. It'll get better as she trains.
Dragon nodded in approval. "That's good," she said. "Do it again, but faster, like the strong paw."

Vera flexed her weaker foreleg for a little bit before she took a faster swipe at the scratching post. The marks she left were the same as she had swinging the first time with her weak paw, but her movement was quicker.
Dragon nodded again with a smile and gave Vera a shred of meat as she flexed her foreleg out again. Vera took it gratefully. "Keep up the good work on that paw, Vera," she said. "You may not be able to see the results right away, but they will show up if you keep at it."
With that, Dragon turned around and began walking away from Vera and the scratching post. It was time again to see if Vera could respond to commands, much like she had with scrape. She already knew what the word was, which was scratch. This was only going to see if she can respond to it.

Vera turned her head to see where her alpha was going, and then she quickly followed her. Already she was thinking to herself on what she was going to do at the command of Dragon. This almost didn't need training, but those were the rules, she bet. Those were the rules and all must abide by them.
As Dragon came to the spot where she had Vera run off before, she slowed to a stop. She turned around to face the scratching post. Vera came up to her and did the same.
"Okay, Vera," Dragon started. "I want you to run up to the post and scratch it, on my command, okay? It will be just like last time, only with 'scratch' instead of 'scrape'."
Vera nodded, turning her head to face the scratching post, readying herself. There was a short pause...
"Scratch!"
...And Vera was off, charging at full speed toward the post. She slowly veered to one side, the side that she would use her strong paw for. When she was close enough, she made a short leap and scratched the post with the claws of her strong paw. As she passed, she circled around to go back toward Dragon.

Vera trotted back to Dragon, who waited for her with a grin. "Excellent job, Vera," she said, petting her Fiero's head when she got close enough. Vera trilled her tongue in pleasure.
"Now do the same thing, only with your other paw," she said now. "Put good effort into it, like you had with scrape."
Vera nodded, turning her head once again to face the post and readying herself.
"Scratch!"
And once again, Vera was charging toward the post. This time, she veered to the opposite side that she had previously ran in. She readied her weaker paw, leaped, and scratched the post, putting as much effort as she could into the scratch.
She ran past, circled, slowed, and began trotting back over to Dragon. Dragon greeted her again with a grin. "That was fantastic," she said. "Keep up the good work."
Dragon gave Vera another shred of meat as a reward for her good work. "That should do it for scratch," she said finally. "You've done remarkably well, but this is only half way through. Let us rest for the time being though."
With that, she walked away, back to the tree, with Vera following her.

They rested under the tree once again, conserving energy for the next training session. Dragon yawned. She was bored, really bored. Just about too bored to even make herself or Vera go through another training session that involved the claws. She knew that eventually it had to happen, but in this current point in time, it couldn't happen now.
There was still much that had to be done, but besides taking small breaks between learning each attack, there were hardly any full breaks from the sessions. Perhaps the time for that was now. Dragon was burnt out, needed a break from training Vera, just so she could clear her mind a little bit. Perhaps with a clearer mind, she'll return to the training renewed and refreshed.
Dragon looked at Vera, who looked almost as burnt out as she. This was understandable. They had been doing nothing but training, and hardly ever anything else. Dragon sighed. Perhaps it really was time for a break, for the both of them.
"Hey Vera..." Dragon started, getting the black Fiero to look at her. "How do you feel about taking a break from training for a bit? Perhaps maybe like going out into the forest to explore and such? We can always come back to training, since I think you know enough to hold your own against someone in battle."
Vera seemed to think about it before she nodded. Going exploring did seem like a good idea, especially after only doing training for so long. Vera grinned and stood up walking away and only stopping to make sure Dragon was following, which she was, with a smile.

The return journey was a long one, but it was also a bit refreshing, much more refreshing than the forest, for different reasons depending on which person you were talking about. For instance, Dragon found it a bit more refreshing because she did not have to worry too much about having to trip over anything. For Vera, she didn't have to keep her senses as tuned in as in the forest, because it was much more open out here than in the forest; if anything were out here, trying to get them, she would have spotted them too.
Finally, they were back to where they had come from, the scratching post still waiting for them. Dragon breathed out a sigh and flopped down onto the grass. Walking could do wonders for the brain, but also numbers for legs. She would need to rest a bit before they started with anything.
Vera simply sat down beside Dragon, also breathing out a sigh. Well, here they were, and once Dragon had rested up, they were training again. At least it didn't sound so bad now, though.

Dragon yawned, baring every single fang in her blue muzzle. She was tired, probably too tired to really do much, but they had to at least continue on in a functioning manner. It didn't help that her legs felt like jelly after walking for so long. Perhaps she could get away with training Vera while sitting, rather than standing, at least until she needed to.
Dragon took a deep breath and sighed before finally standing up. She couldn't sit around and teach, because that was lazy. She needed to stand up, work with Vera as Vera worked with her. There would be time to rest afterward.
Dragon dragged herself over to the scratching post now. Vera followed her, naturally, with much less trouble than her alpha. Dragon stopped in front of the post now and looked at Vera again. "I would like you to dig your claws into the scratching post, harder than a scratch," she said to Vera now.

Vera looked at Dragon, wondering if she really should do it. Her alpha seemed really tired, probably from that walk back. Perhaps it was better if her alpha sat down instead of standing? It would provide more rest for her than it would if she kept working herself all the time.
Dragon looked at Vera, seeing her concern for her. "Vera, I'm fine," she said, reassuring her with a smile. "My legs are just a little tired, that's all. Now claw the post, strong paw first."
Vera looked at her alpha for a little longer before looking back at the post. Stronger than scratch, she had said? Sounded simple enough anyway. She took the claws of her strong paw and dug them into the post as she swiped them across it.
Dragon came over to examine the marks. "Not bad, Vera," she said, smiling. "It looks like you understand the gist of what we are training for today."
