Bite? All of this training was to get up to being able to bite? Wow. Still, this was a great opportunity to show of Vera's strength to her alpha. She hoped she would be pleased. She did say a strong, hard bite, right?
Vera opened her jaws now, displaying her awesome fangs that had been preparing for this moment, the moment to finally be used for testing their master's strength. With the opening of her jaws came the curling of her lips that was characteristic of a snarl.
She drew back her head, and then, with a snarl of preparation, she snapped forward at the branch, clamping her jaws tightly around it. She bit down hard, with all her might, until she her a snap. However, she could not get the branch to snap off. She bit harder. More cracking, but still no snap. The branch was a green stick, and those were hard to snap.

Dragon was still when Vera bit down on the branch with sudden force. She had been prepared for such force, but she had hardly ever seen such for demonstrated to her. Vera was indeed a strong biter, and that bite would likely grow stronger as they kept practicing with it.
Vera let go of the branch now, mouth covered in sticky, clear sap, which she licked from her muzzle. The branch where it had been bitten was crushed, oozing the clear sap from its gaping wound. This only amazed Dragon more.
Vera grunted in dissatisfaction. She couldn't break the branch because it was too new, and therefore not fit for breaking. But, she did manage to crush it, so would that be enough to satisfy her alpha? Judging from her alpha's face, it seemed so.
Dragon smiled. "That was an excellent demonstration of your power," she said now. "Too bad that I need to get a new branch though, since even though it withstood your bite, it still got crushed." She chuckled and went over to where she got the branch, discarding the one in her paws and taking a new one of longer length.
"This should do," she said, partly to herself as she walked back over to Vera. "I would like you to bite this one, but I would like you to bite more towards the top. It may break easier that way."

Vera examined this new branch that Dragon had gotten. Then she opened her jaws and bit down on the tip of it, this time not quite as hard as she had the first time, but still hard enough to leave an impact on the branch.
The branch was still a little new, but not as new as that green stick that Dragon had first picked out. Therefore, it didn't splinter, but it didn't ooze sap either. Vera let go to examine the damage, and it was a result very much like the other branch, even though there was less power behind the bite.
Dragon examined the tip of the branch, and then broke it off. Vera tilted her head at this action. Why did her alpha break off the tip of the branch? Did she do something wrong?
Dragon only smiled though and gave the confused Vera another meaty treat. "The tip of the branch might pose a hazard for further training," Dragon explained at seeing her Fiero's confusion. "So I broke it off. I'll keep doing that as we go along."

"You likely know what comes next after two practice moves, right?" Dragon said. "Since this whole process is stupidly repetitive, which I apologize for. It won't be like that after this though, although that might just get repetitive as well..."
One of Vera's ears twitched before she she yawned. Yawning was basically her way of saying, "You're rambling again, can we get back to what we were doing?" She had established this awhile ago with her alpha, especially when she went on one of her ranting or rambling sprees.
Dragon stopped speaking when she saw the yawn. Then she cleared her throat and began waving the stick around, slowly. There was no explanation needed for what she was doing, because like she had said earlier, the process was repetitive.
Biting was much easier to do than nipping, because biting just required you to take a big chunk out of someone, which covered a wider area than nipping did. Vera opened her jaws wide and bit the branch as it came to her, snapping the tip off as she did so.

Vera spat out the broken piece of wood and licked her gums to check for splinters. Finding none, she waited for the next part of the branch waving, or another treat, if Dragon felt like giving her another shred of meat.
Dragon did give her another shred of meat, which she was grateful for, along with a smile of approval. She then began to wave the branch again, and like last time, faster than the previous.
Vera snapped at the branch again, breaking the new tip off again. And again, she spat out the wood and licked her gums, inspecting them for splinters once more. She needed to be sure her teeth were hazard free, since splinters open up all sorts of possibilities for all sorts of infections. Infections of the mouth were bad, especially since her only eye was tied to her mouth. Well, she could live without her eye, but then she would miss out on seeing all the pretty colors, even if she couldn't make out their shapes with her eye alone.

Dragon waited for Vera to be finished with her inspections before giving her another shred of meat. They were almost done, and not just with training Bite. Bite was the last attack that had to do with the jaws and fangs of a Fiero. The next thing that came after that would be attacks that had to do with the claws, those big, black, talon-like claws that every Normal Fiero possessed.
Dragon began waving the branch around again, and this time in the random pattern practiced in the other two attacks previous. Vera once again hit the mark on the head, once again breaking off the tip of the branch. Dragon was lucky that there was still enough of the branch to finish up with the test.
Vera spat the wood out and then inspected her gums again. Still no splinters, nor any sign of openings. She could not taste blood either, which was another good sign. She was ready for the test.

Dragon waited, again, for Vera's inspections to be complete. After Vera was done, she looked up expectantly at Dragon, waiting for what in next to come: the test.
"Are you ready for the test, Vera?" Dragon asked. There was a nod from Vera. "You won't be able to check for splinters during the test, so I'd advise you to be careful not to impale yourself. Vera nodded again in understanding. She could understand that in the heat of any battle, it was only wise to check on your wounds until safe to do so. She was going to pretend that the only safe time to check is after the test.
Dragon nodded, and then she began waving the branch around slowly. "Bite!" she commanded.
Vera snapped at the branch, biting off the tip as she did so. She spat out the wood just as Dragon sped up the waving. "Bite!"
Once again, Vera lunged at the waving branch and bit down on it, again taking off the tip and spitting it out to ready herself for the final task: the randomized movements. "Bite!"
And again, Vera lunged at the branch and snapped off the tip with her strength, and then she spat out the wood. Dragon set down the branch. The test was done.
Vera inspected her gums again, and was dismayed to find that a few managed to get through in the heat of the test. She carefully licked them out and spat them out, and with her tongue continued to nurse the wounds until she was sure the blood had stopped.
Dragon came over to Vera and stroked her neck gently. "Injuries are, sadly, an occupational hazard..." she said apologetically. "They'll crop up wherever you go, but you'll learn to live with them eventually, much like I had to..."
Vera wondered what Dragon meant by her last few words, but her mind go interrupted when Dragon continued. "Let us rest for now. You have done a splendid job on the last level of oral attacks, and after we rest, we shall go onto something completely different."
Vera looked at her alpha and nodded, and the two of them went back to the tree to rest.

Resting under the shade of the tree, was what Dragon and Vera were doing now after accomplishing the task of training "fang combat". However, there was still much training that needed to be done, especially with the new set of attacks that Dragon needed to plan out. The "claw combat" was going to have to be trained differently from the fang combat, because there were more claws to train with, and there would likely be no moving target to practice with, unfortunately.
Dragon took out a little storage cube and shifted through it. In this storage cube were training items that she had brought along with her for training purposes. One of these was a huge scratching post that she had managed to construct out of an older scratching post that she had found on Earth. She had had it modified by then to be useful for battle training by then.
Dragon stood up and walked out onto the field. She basically had to shake the scratch post out, since it was too big and heavy to really take out. The post itself was rather thick and rather tall, tall enough for a Fiero, and thick enough for their claws as well.
As always, Vera watched what her alpha with curiosity. This strange new object that she had somehow pulled out of something so small was fascinating to her at least, but what was more fascinating was the new object itself. She stood up and walked over to stand beside her alpha.
Dragon looked up from the post at Vera now. "This is what is called a 'scratching post'," she explained. "Cats use these things to sharpen their claws. We are going to use it to practice the next few attacks that I want to teach you."
She looked at the post again. "See if you can do a light scratch to that post," she said now, pointing at it.

Vera looked blankly at Dragon before looking at the huge, weird looking thing. She tilted her head at it before she walked up to it. She let her tongue hang out, eye popping open, as she walked around the scratching post. Her eyeball moved up and down each side of the post as she circled, scanning it, taking in every speck of detail she could about it. It didn't at all seem dangerous, and it was likely some sort of new training object that Dragon had brought out for her.
Then Vera picked up one of her paws and examined her three black talon-sized claws on it. Then she looked back up at the post. She looked back down at her claws again for a moment before taking them and making a very light scratch in the post. She could not see what damage she caused to the scratching post, but she knew that she scratched it lightly, and she knew that her alpha saw her lightly scratch it as well.

Vera looked at her alpha. Dragon gave an approving nod and walked up to Vera. "The light scratch that you had just made was called a scrape," she explained. "I am going to teach you how to make this light scratch on command. It may not do a whole lot of damage, but I bet with your power level and skill, it could definitely take someone down a few points."
Vera flicked an ear before looking back at the scratching post. A few thoughts crept into her mind. This was definitely going to be trained differently from the bite commands from past lessons. How were they going to practice on a moving target? Perhaps that was something that she would have to learn on the fly? That would likely have to be it, because the basic move set wouldn't change, but the target definitely would. And besides, this was basic, common knowledge. Vera was only learning to to respond to certain commands from her alpha for them.
"Scrape again," Dragon said, breaking Vera's train of thought. "But do it with more speed. Your attacker would easily dodge something that went at the speed you had gone at previously."
Shaking her head vigorously to clear it, Vera focused again on the scratching post. She took her claws again and swiped them quickly across the post to make the same light scratches she had before.

Vera turned to look at Dragon again, who again nodded approvingly. "Excellent," she said with a smile. "Now try scraping it with your other paw."
Vera tilted her head at this. Why her other paw? Wasn't she doing just fine with her current paw? The paw that she was currently using was her strong paw, much like how a human has a strong hand for writing and other activities. It didn't really make sense to do something with her weaker paw.
Dragon sighed. "You shouldn't use your strongest paw for everything, Vera," she said. "What would you do if suddenly your strongest paw was injured in battle or something? What would you do then? You would be left with your other paw, which right now doesn't amount to much right now. That's why we need to train it, so that it gets stronger."
Vera tilted her head the other way as she thought this over. What her alpha said did make sense, so perhaps maybe she should work on the strength of her other paw. It would be a good workout, none the less.
Vera took her other, weaker paw, and swiped it across the scratching post. It was a little more effort, and it was slower, but she got the job of making a light scratch down anyway.

Vera flexed her foreleg out and in multiple times before setting it back down on the ground. Much like how a human's weak arm becomes more tired out than the stronger counterpart, Vera's weaker foreleg had tired out as well. It would likely take more practice with it for it to become stronger and not as difficult a task as it was now.
Dragon nodded with approval. "Tiring out is one of the signs of workout," she said, smiling. "Pain, sadly, is too. You shouldn't let it discourage you though, because if you train it more, it becomes less and less of a hassle in the future. You should probably scrape it again with your weak paw once you have rested a little bit so you can strengthen it up more."
Vera nodded in understanding. She stretched her weaker foreleg out a little more before making another swipe at the scratching post, trying to be faster and putting more effort into it than she had with the previous swing.

Dragon once again examined the scratches and nodded approvingly. "Just keep working that weak paw, and soon it may not really even be weak anymore," she said with a grin. If only she could say that about writing.
Vera nodded at her alpha as she stretched out her leg again before putting it back on the ground. Dragon then gave her a shred of meat. This was the first meat bit that she had gotten for the whole lesson. Vera wondered why as she took it and chewed on it. Perhaps she was lessening to amount of meat she gave to make it more of a reward and less of something to expect for everything done.
Never the less, the lesson wasn't over yet. Even though it looked like it, it wasn't. Vera's alpha seemed to have more planned for her before the lesson on Scrape was out.
Dragon walked back a few yards away from the scratching post now. Vera tilted her head and followed her. She didn't really understand what her alpha was doing, but perhaps it was somehow tied with the lesson.

After she was a few yards away, Dragon stopped and turned around to face the scratching post again, which was now far away. Vera came to stand beside her alpha, looking puzzled. What was her alpha planning?
Dragon looked up at Vera before looking back at the scratching post and pointing to it. "On my command, I want you to run up to the scratching post and scrape it with your strong paw as you run past it, okay?" she said now, looking up again at Vera, who was looking down at her.
Vera nodded as she looked back at the scratching post. On command...her alpha was probably talking about the sound "scrape". That would be the word she'll charge on.
"Scrape!"
As the sound left her alpha's mouth, Vera started her charge toward the post. As she got closer she started to move to one side of her target. When she got close enough, she leaped, scraped the post, and then just as quickly ran away from it, a hit and run, as they say.

Vera trotted back over to Dragon, who had a grin on her face as she nodded approvingly. Vera wagged her tail.
"That was excellent work, Vera," Dragon said as Vera got close enough. "Once you have rested a little bit, I would like you to do the same thing, on my command, but only with your other, weaker paw. Okay?"
Vera nodded in understanding as she huffed, bringing in extra oxygen with each breath to help control her breathing a little more to prepare herself for the next assignment her alpha had put out for her to do.
She now stood facing the post as she caught her breath, shaking her fur to signal to her alpha that she was ready.
Dragon nodded and she as well faced the scratching post.
"Scrape!"
And again, Vera was charging at the post. Her first instinct was to use her strong paw, but she remember that her alpha wanted her to use her weaker paw, so instead of moving in the angle she had previously, she moved in the opposite angle so that she could use her weaker paw.
As she came up to the post, she scraped it with the claws on her weaker paw and jumped away to circle back over to Dragon. She was surprised to find that she dodged a bit better when she used her weak paw than when she used her strong paw. How interesting.
Vera trotted back over to Dragon, who smiled and gave her a shred of meat for a reward, which Vera gladly licked out of her alpha's paw. Her tail wagged.
"That was magnificent work," Dragon said. "Since this is about all we can do for scrape, I say we are done. Too bad there aren't many volunteers for moving targets, but I think if I just shout out the command, you would know what to do anyway, I would hope."
She chuckled to herself as she began walking back to the tree. Vera followed her, making a sound similar to a chuckle as well.
