River never really had anything that was even close to a 'pet' in her life. Fieros technically weren't even pets anyway, given how intelligent many people say they were. They were more like companions, and you basically played the role of their leader, sort of like a dog, but yet unlike a dog. It was complicated to think about it, but she thought about it nonetheless as she walked toward an open field, with a silver, black, and wine-red colored Fiero trotting beside her. This particular Fiero was a male, and a very shrimpy one at that. He wasn't the normal size of a male, but quite a bit smaller, making it look like he was more the size of a large breed pony rather than a full scale horse. He was also very much like a fox with his longer ears, thinner build, and longer snout, along with nine tails flowing from his fluffy behind, each tipped with black. His eyes were a dark teal, and had slits instead of the full round pupils most Fieros had. (Word Count: 178) (Level 3)

What was even stranger to River was just how this Fiero, who she had named Zephyr, became so mutated in so little time. From when she found him as a puppy, he had only one tail, his ears and snout were normal, and he had a bit of puppy fat on him, which was likely what other puppies had, even if they were runts. Well, that was one thing that did not really change when he grew up.
Dragon had said in the letter that Fieros were supposed to be the size of horses, females naturally being larger than males. She knew Zephyr was a male, and it like contributed somewhat to how small he was, but that didn't explain to her why he was the size of a large pony instead of a good sized horse. Perhaps maybe that was just how he was born, and it shouldn't be worried about too much.
They finally arrived at a spot in the Training Meadow that was not too closely occupied by other people, and then River stopped. This was where they were going to train. Dragon had told her so.

River took out a piece of paper from a pocket in her clothing. Because of the fact that she only had three digits to work with per paw, the writing on it was near illegible and more like chicken scratch. However, if you were a very good interpreter and reader, you could faintly make out the words "Accept contact", "Nibble" and some others like that.
This of course was a list that River had made up based on Dragon's suggestions in another letter that she had received shortly after acquiring Zephyr. She had strongly suggested 'Accept Contact', mainly for the reason that it was important to bond more with the Fiero that you were trying to train, since the bonding that took place when they were pups only helped them to grow, and contact and stuff like that would have to be repeated all over again to the Fiero when it was an adult.

River looked up from this piece of paper and at Zephyr. Zephyr looked back at her and tilted his head. He respected his alpha and all, but sometimes she could be quite strange and unpredictable. She didn't seem to be at all that experienced, but seeing that he was the only Fiero around her, that could explain why.
Then there was the question of what they were doing here. Zephyr's alpha never really said much as they walked down here. What were they going to do here?
River continued to look at Zephyr's tilted head as she tried to figure out exactly what it was that she was going to do. Dragon had stated that Fieros, once they were adults, could understand their owners, but they sometimes just couldn't understand their body language. Would that mean that she would have to explain to Zephyr the reasons for why they were here, or could they start right now?
She chose to try and start right now. Carefully, and slowly, she walked up to him and gently put a paw on his back.

Zephyr flicked his long ears back and stepped away from River's paw. There she was, being weird again. How many times has she tried to do that to him, and a better question would probably be, what exactly is it that she's trying to accomplish with it?
River sighed and pulled her paw back. Whoever knew bonding with Fieros was difficult? She lightly chewed the inside of her cheek as she tried to think of a better way to approach the situation.
Zephyr just watched her, an ear laying back and a confused expression on his face. Just what was his alpha trying to do? She never explained anything to him, not even about this. Sometimes there were moments where he wished he could actually communicate with her, but for a Fiero, such interactions were impossible, unless you improvised and made the receiver of the information interpret it correctly, but that too was difficult.
River tapped one of the toes on her one of her feet, still thinking. Then a thought occurred to her. Perhaps she should try to get Zephyr to make the first move, without having her being too awkward about it.

River held out her paw now, hoping that Zephyr would understand the gesture and come over to her. That's probably the one thing she hated about her friend. When she gives advice, she gives suggestions, not instructions on how to do something without completely messing up. How hypocritical, considering the fact that Dragon didn't like the idea of suggestions either and also prefers instructions.
Zephyr watched his alpha for a long time, still wondering what it was that she was doing. However, the gesture she was making now seemed much more friendlier than the touching that she had been doing to him, not to mention that she looked a little desperate.
Slowly he walked back toward her, still with an ear cocked to the side. He still wasn't exactly sure on what was happening here. He started to think more about this. Perhaps he shouldn't have pulled away so quickly. Maybe he would have gotten his answer if he waited a bit longer. The feeling of his alpha's paw on his back still felt weird though.

Zephyr now stood once again in front of his alpha, waiting for her next move. It was still very awkward for him, not just to stand there, but just to wait for her to do something, the strange beast that she was.
River could feel the awkwardness on her end as well. The only thing she could really think to do was to smile sheepishly for a few moments. But then she started moving her paw a little closer to Zephyr, and Zephyr watched this paw very closely. He shifted over to the side a little bit as the paw started getting a little too close to the side of his neck, but then the thought he had earlier occurred to him again, which made him stand still again.
River gently touched the soft neck fur of the large pony sized Fiero, and when he only shifted slightly this time, she grinned faintly.

"Well, that was much better than before, eh?" River said now, slowly taking out a small shred of meat and then giving it to Zephyr, who sniffed it tentatively before licking it out of the palm of her paw. "This isn't so bad, is it now?" she continued, now slowly moving her paw through Zephyr's neck fur in careful and gentle strokes, making sure to be soothing rather than startling.
It wasn't too long before Zephyr started leaning into this stroking, because while the touch felt weird, the smooth and gentle strokes were actually quite nice, soothing even, soothing almost to the point where he was starting to close his eyes a little bit.
The only reason why he didn't fall over was because his alpha started to move over to his side, slowly of course, but enough to wake him up and watch her movements. "It's okay, Zephyr..." River whispered now. "I'm not going to hurt you."

Zephyr cocked an ear to the side and still watched his alpha. River again began to slowly stroke Zephyr's neck again, which was soothing enough for him to partially take his guard down. Then River began to move slowly down to Zephyr's back, and Zephyr was once again watching his alpha closely. Of course, like with his neck, it wasn't too long before the strokes along his back started to feel good too.
River now took out another shred of meat and gave it to Zephyr, who took it without much thought now. "You're doing good," she said as she began to stroke closer to Zephyr's hindquarters. Zephyr didn't take much notice to this now. He just kept leaning into it.
After stroking his hindquarters for a little bit, River started to run her toes through the fur of one of his nine, long tails. Zephyr opened his half closed eyes and then looked behind him at her.

"Don't mind me too much back here, boy," River said, glancing up for a moment at Zephyr before looking back down at what she was doing. "I'm only petting your tails. It won't take too long, I promise."
Of course, this was a lot of fur to go through, as not only were these tails long, but there were nine of them. One at a time, she supposed; just one at a time.
River continued to stroke the one that she currently had in her paws, all the way from the silvery base to the charcoal black tip. All the time, Zephyr was watching her, his ears partially laid back. River didn't look up anymore as she continued to stroke each tail like she had with the first one. She stroked each one slowly, but quick enough to get it over with before Zephyr got too annoyed or anything.
Now she was back to stroking Zephyr's hindquarters, and then his back as she came back over to his front.

Zephyr started to lean into the strokes again, a bit happier that his alpha wasn't touching his tails anymore. He hoped that she wouldn't find much reason to touch them again, because he didn't like it. He didn't know exactly why, but he just didn't like the feeling of hands a toes and fingers and such running through the fur of his tails.
River gave him another shred of meat for the trouble, though, and that made him a little more happy. Well, at least he got something out of it too, he thought to himself now.
River's paw now started to climb up his neck again, and he didn't protest to it; in fact, he welcomed it now. Then she brought her paw up to his head, slowly and gently. Zephyr didn't protest to this either; he leaned into that too, in fact. This gave River the opportunity to touch the rest of his face.

River began lightly scratching the backs of Zephyr's long, fox like ears when she was finished with the top of his head. Zephyr made a low groan in his throat, but it was a happy one, one of pleasure rather than annoyance or pain. This made River smile. Yes, she seemed to be on the right track with doing this right.
River moved away from Zephyr's ears now and began massaging his cheeks, which produced more moans of pleasure. Then River started massaging his chin and lower jaw, which produced the same result. River then moved one of her paws back up to his head and, while the other paw stroked one of his cheeks, moved the paw down between his eyes slowly and down the top of his snout. Zephyr did not seem to mind though.
River paused from the strokes and massages to give Zephyr another shred of meat.

"That's being a good boy, Zephyr..." River said to him with a grin as she lightly scratched his cheek. "We should be almost done now; just a few more places to get."
Zephyr didn't understand entirely what his alpha meant by that, but he figured that that did not really concern him. It probably meant something that had to do with more stroking and massaging, and as long as she wasn't going to touch his tails again, he was perfectly fine with that.
River now brought her paw away from Zephyr's head, and then she began stroking Zephyr's neck again until he leaned into it with moans of pleasure. Then she moved her paw more towards the front of his neck and gently stroked his throat, not hard enough to cause any bad reaction from it or anything.
Then she moved her paw downward, in slow, circular movements, until she was now stroking Zephyr's chest.

Zephyr's chest, although felt a little bony, likely due to his small stature, still portrayed a relatively strong animal. That was a good sign, because a strong Fiero was likely a great thing to have around, especially if there were dangers in this world, which was most likely. It would also be an indicator for speed, since you would need a strong heart and lungs as you ran.
When River received no protest from her touching Zephyr's chest, she then moved her paw back up, lightly massaging one of his shoulders for a moment before moving over to be beside him. She started at the top of his back, and then she slowly started working her paw in circular strokes, all the way down his flank, to the area just above the belly.
From her own experience, River knew how sensitive the belly was, especially because it was one of the most sensitive parts on the body, and the part to receive the most damage if hit directly.

Zephyr shifted a bit away from River's paw, just before she tried to touch his belly. His belly was very ticklish, and its minimal covering of fur made him nervous about anything touching it. His ears flattened as he looked up at his alpha, because somehow he figured that this was going to happen. He knew that she needed to be able to touch his belly, to stroke it gently at least, but even then, he didn't want it. What if she were to hurt him or something? Those claws on his alpha's paws did look a bit sharp, and although he didn't feel too much of them on the rest of him, what would happen to his soft belly?
River flattened her ears slightly as she straightened up to look at Zephyr again. "It's okay, Zephyr," she said. "I'm not going to hurt you. I know that your belly is a very soft spot, and I'll try to be really careful there, okay?"
