Zephyr tilted his head in the other direction as he thought of this. Yes, this actually did make sense. Nibbling did not sound like a strong attack, but neither did chewing something lightly. So, they must be the same thing or something of a similar nature.
"So, would you like to give this another go?" River asked again, holding up the old toy again, flat part still nearest to Zephyr's head. Zephyr nodded, although a little part of him was beginning to nag at him from in the back of his mind about it.
River nodded again, and held out the toy to Zephyr again. Zephyr sniffed it again, and then slowly closed his teeth around it. He didn't bite down too hard, but he did start to chew it lightly, and slowly.
Eventually he let go again, and saw that his teeth had made little indents in the rubber, some of these indents more like puncture marks than actual indents.

River took the toy away from Zephyr's view to examine the marks herself. "Not bad," she said with a smile. "Not bad at all. However, you should probably do it a little quicker, since whatever your future opponent may be might be able to easily dodge that." River held out the rubber toy again. "Try again, this time a little more swiftly."
Zephyr tilted his head for a moment before looking at the rubber toy again. Then he opened his jaws and made the attempt to bite into it to chew, but the rubber toy was suddenly not where it was supposed to be. His teeth clamped down on each other, with the sudden pressure startling him. He looked around after he recovered. What happened?
"I told you to be quick," River said, grinning faintly. The rubber toy was still in her three toed paw, just farther away from Zephyr's jaws.

Zephyr flattened his ears at his alpha in annoyance. Here she said to be quick, yes, but did he expect her to take it from him? Nooo. River just continued to grin. "What I just showed you there is what a moving target may do," she said. "If you can't hit the moving target, you can be the most powerful Fiero around and still not win. It's all about how quick you do it, bud, not about how strong your bite is."
River held out the rubber toy again. "Try once more; nibble," she said, adding in the new command as well. This time, Zephyr didn't really move at all. He merely stared at the toy, as if expecting it to move away from him at any second by now. Yet, it did not. Zephyr would likely have to make the first move, and he should do it quick, like his alpha said.
Zephyr then shot forward, managing to catch a hold of the toy in his jaws to chew on before River could completely move it out of the way. Now that was impressive speed, thought River.

Zephyr eventually let go of the rubber toy again so that his alpha could prepare him for another try. This didn't seem too hard at all, but the nagging feeling in the back of his mind did not leave him. This nagging feeling was telling him that doing this was wrong. Something about it was wrong, at least. The fact that he would have to do this to another Fiero did not seem too pleasant either. Still, though, he wanted to please his alpha, and knowing good defense strategies should be okay.
"Okay, Zephyr," River said, retracting her arm again and letting it rest beside her. "I think one more time should be enough for you to grasp this, okay?" She held out the rubber toy again. "Nibble."
Zephyr snapped at the toy without hesitation this time, catching River off guard as well. His jaws clamped around it and he started nibbling it, like he was told to do, before he let go again and sat down, looking up at his alpha with a face betraying the question: How did I do?
River grinned faintly at the vulpine Fiero. "I think that will be enough of that for now..." she said. Then she looked up at the sky to see the sun set. "We should probably start heading home soon, too. We'll continue this later."
River packed the toy in with the rest of what she had brought over before she started making her way back to her mansion, with Zephyr following behind her, proud of accomplishing something, but still a bit uncomfortable about it.

It had been quite some time since they were last here in the Training Meadow, River could tell that for sure. This was mostly because Zephyr had apparently things to do that she did not really know in full detail, but she could tell that he had been excited, whatever it was. For many days even, he would be absent, before coming back briefly as if to make sure that she knew that he was doing alright, before disappearing again for a few more days.
It wasn't until many more days had passed that he finally revealed to her just what had been going on with him. That day, he had brought home a puppy, and a puppy that bore many of his distinctive marks and colors, but also colors and marks of a different Fiero. It was clear to River that this puppy was his, a product of him and another female that she may or may not get the chance to meet. Zephyr seemed so proud of himself as he carried that puppy to her, tails held unusually high; it was almost like he had a complete change of personality or something from that experience.
Hopefully that would help with the training.

River brought all the necessities back with her; mostly hard rubber toys that Zephyr could easily chew on this time since attacks that involved biting seemed to come easier for both of them. She should probably start with Nip next, since that was the next step up from Nibble.
Zephyr yawned as they came in to where they had trained last. He hoped that they weren't going to continue with the attack training. As much as it was useful, he did not enjoy it that much, and doing only attacks seemed very boring to him. He already knew how to Nibble, so why not just leave it at that and do something different? It would probably be more stimulating for the both of them.
His hopes were dampened when River brought out one of the chew toys. Zephyr grumbled and flattened his ears, making River look up at him in curiosity. He turned his head away and snorted. She flattened her own ears at this. It was apparent to her that Zephyr didn't want to learn how to Nip right now, so she put the toy away.
But what was she going to teach him then? Could Fieros be trained like dogs to do tricks? She didn't want to treat him like a lowly dog; Zephyr was anything but, but what choice did she really have here?
"Alright then, Zephyr..." she said now, crossing her arms. "Sit."

One of Zephyr's long ears twitched before he looked back at his alpha. Slowly his muzzle cracked into a grin. Yes, she changed her mind! They were learning something totally different now, he could tell from the get go. Now all he had to do was figure out exactly what they were doing.
Sit...as new as the word sounded, it seemed simple enough. Zephyr sat down lightly on his haunches, curling all nine of his tails neatly around his legs very much like how a cat would. He looked up at his alpha now, still grinning.
River had noticed this grinning going on, but then she blinked at just how easily Zephyr obeyed the command, and yet he was still grinning, even after doing something so lowly as sitting like an obedient dog. Perhaps maybe this was something that Zephyr preferred to do. That thought never really occurred to her.

River had been so deep in thought about all this that she had totally forgotten to reward Zephyr for his obedience. She never really thought about how to reward anyone with good behavior if they seemed to eager enough to be doing it already; Zephyr had always seemed so hesitant about a lot of things before now.
There was quite an awkward silence here, enough to now make Zephyr lose his grin and become uneasy. Did he do something wrong? He was pretty sure he followed the command correctly. He was sitting down, just like he was instructed...but perhaps maybe she meant for him to do something different instead? It sounded straightforward enough, but alphas could be very strange with what they want and how they word things.
Zephyr stood up now and looked at his alpha with a tilted head, face full of concern and worry. He whined at her now.

Zephyr's movements and whimpering made River's mind snap back to the present world, now bringing her attention to what had just occurred during her moment of spacing out. Zephyr was still watching her with a tilted head and worried face, and his tails were drooping. That looked very much like the old Zephyr that she was used to, but now this made her worried.
River came over to him now and slowly began gently massaging his cheek, which helped to get him in a better mood. "I'm sorry boy..." she said as she continued to stroke him, now moving to his chin and throat. "Did I scare you with my bewilderment? I didn't mean to..." She smiled faintly at him. "I'll be sure to pay better attention next time, okay?"
River straightened up now, with Zephyr looking back at her, feeling much better after the reassurance that it had nothing negative to do with him.

River smiled faintly at Zephyr, and a smile appeared on Zephyr's muzzle. She would have to agree that communication between the two of them was not the best in any way, shape, or form, but at least they could come to a mutual understanding.
Of course, now they had to go through the whole process again, because River needed to fully analyze just what Zephyr would do when given the command to sit. She kind of got side tracked by just being mesmerized by how well he followed the command.
Of course it likely wasn't at all that necessary, she still wanted to be sure. "Okay, boy..." she said now, stepping back a few steps to give him more room. "Sit."
And just like he did before, Zephyr sat down lightly on his haunches, wrapping all nine of his tails neatly around his feet. Very impressive for a Fiero; then again, Fieros were very impressive creatures to begin with. There probably wasn't anything a Fiero couldn't do.

River grinned and gave an approving nod. "Excellent, Zephyr..." she said, before he stood up again, tails wagging lightly. "Now, sit again." Once again, Zephyr sat, still curling his tails neatly around his legs, and this time straightening up his overall posture.
"Very good," River said as she came over to him again and began massaging his cheek again. "That should be it for that, since it's kind of obvious that you'll do it for me whenever I say so, right?"
Zephyr began to nod, but then something far off caught his attention, making him not only look in that direction, but move toward it. And move quickly. "Hey!" River called after him, surprised. "Sit!"
Like an off switch, Zephyr stopped in his tracks and then sat down on his rump with a thud, stunned by just how stern the command was. He turned his head back to look at his alpha, who walked over to him now. He flattened his ears apologetically.
"Well, now I know what to train you next...." River said now, "although I do think we should get back to training Nip..."

Zephyr flattened his ears and moaned, sounding like a child who was not getting what he wanted. Did they have to? Training for attacks were so boring; not to mention that they were designed to hurt people.
River rolled her eyes and looked back at Zephyr. "Yeah yeah, I know you don't like the idea, but it's necessary..." she said. "You had your fun with the last trick, but now we have to get into the more serious stuff. I promise that after this is all over and done with, that we'll go back to the more fun stuff, okay?"
Zephyr sighed and rolled his own eyes before slowly nodding at his alpha. Although he didn't like it at all, if they got it over and done with quickly, then they'll get on to more fun things.
River smiled before taking out the rubber toy from earlier and holding it in front of Zephyr. "Okay now, Zephyr," she said. "Nip."

Zephyr tilted his head at his alpha before looking down at the rubber toy in front of him. He tilted his head at that too. Nip...That was certainly a different word from Nibble, and luckily one that he was a little more familiar with. It was a light bite was it not? A step up from nibbling no doubt, but still nowhere close to a full out bite. It should not be too difficult, right?
Zephyr opened his mouth, preparing his attack. Then he grabbed onto part of the toy with his incisor teeth and bit down, before pulling away again. The process was neither fast nor slow, therefore it was not entirely a nip. The intent was there, but the execution was not the best.
River let her arm rest after Zephyr was finished, before holding up the toy again to examine it. "Well, you got at least half the idea down, that's for sure..." she said now.

Zephyr tilted his head now, confused by what his alpha had said. Only half? But...Nips were light bites, were they not? He had made a light bite with the front of his teeth, did he not? Perhaps there was something more that he was just simply missing from the whole thing, something small, but crucial to the very thing.
River smiled faintly at Zephyr's obvious confusion and scratched him behind the ears. "It was an excellent first try, but it was just way too slow to be an actual nip," she said.
Zephyr tilted his head the other way now. Too slow? Not quick enough? Was that the small, yet crucial piece that was missing to the equation? He gave a small grunt at this, not in disapproval, but not really in acceptance quite yet either.
River held out the toy to Zephyr again. "Just try again," she said. "But this time, try to be quicker about it. Nipping is all about how quick you are with that light bite, after all."

Zephyr tilted his head at his alpha again, raising an eye while narrowing the other, before looking at the toy again. A quick, light bite. That was what he needed to do. He had to do it like he had last time, but quicker; that was it. Sounded simple enough.
Zephyr opened his lips to show his front teeth, before he bit into the toy and pulled away. It was faster than the initial first attempt that he made earlier, but it was still apparent that it could still use some work.
"Well, it was definitely better than your first attempt," River said with a smile as she had her arm with the toy rest at her side. "But it has to be faster than that, without as much thought process as your putting into it, alright?"
Zephyr sighed before he nodded. No, he was not doing it right, but at least he was making progress toward that.
